Dial-up card readers are a point of sale payment system that connects to an analog phone line and transmits card information to a processor similar to how older computer modems connected to dial-up Internet. The device calls a toll-free number and once the call is answered by the processor, modems are synchronized and the transaction is confirmed. Dial-up card readers are slower than point-of-sale systems that operate through Internet IP addresses but their information transmissions are more secure.
